Barley Hall
Barley Hall
Experience what life was like in this magnificent restored medieval townhouse with the help of our friendly Barley Hall servants.
What We Offer Visiting Schools
A visit to Barley Hall allows students to become immersed in life in a wealthy merchant’s townhouse in the Middle Ages. Learn about the Snawsell family who lived here towards the end of the medieval period. You can discover how the remains of their home were uncovered and restored.
Why Choose Us for an Educational Visit
All booked groups are welcome to take a tour of Barley Hall with a costumed guide. This 15th-century townhouse comes to life as you are led through the private and public spaces of a medieval Lord Mayor of York’s family home. As you explore the house you will learn about the building materials used in its construction, the functions of the different rooms and the divisions in society between the rich and the poor that are at play during the late medieval and early Tudor periods.
Subjects and Topics Covered
A school visit to Barley Hall is the perfect fit for supporting history topics on the Medieval and Tudor periods. Our cross-curricular workshops explore themes such as medicines, warfare and literacy during the Medieval and Tudor periods.
Itineraries, Resources, and Workshops
Extend your visit with our 45-minute workshop sessions. Each aims to spark your pupils’ interest in the past by exploring a variety of fun and interesting themes. Designed with Key Stage 2 in mind, but suitable for all key stages, our learning team are happy to discuss your specific learning aims.
