Windermere Jetty Museum offers an immersive journey through 200 years of maritime history, providing schools with a unique blend of educational experiences. Our programs are designed to engage, inspire, and educate students about the rich heritage of Windermere and the technological advancements that has shaped its maritime culture.

Why Choose Us for an Educational Visit:

Windermere Jetty Museum houses one of the world’s most important collections of boats related to a single region. The collection now comprises of 60 vessels, with over half the collection on display to the public.

Subjects and Topics Covered:

Our collection serves as a gateway to understanding British society’s development and technological progress. Through our exhibits and activities, students will discover the stories that ties boat builders, workers, writers, and enthusiasts to our heritage boat collection. Explore the evolution of engineering and craftsmanship with our friendly on-site conservation team. During your visit we will also touch on the social and cultural history of the Lake District.

Students will explore our collection galleries through interactive exhibits, trails and stories. They will take part in a creative workshop, using child-safe tools and recycled materials to get to grips with the construction techniques used by our very own conservation team. Taking time to pause and appreciate the beauty of our surroundings, they will also have a chance to create their own artwork inspired by spaces in and around the museum. Experience life on the lake with a 20-minute open air heritage boat trip.

Group Sizes Catered For:

We can accommodate large groups of students and tend to split them up into groups when they arrive on site. The Learning Centre can comfortably facilitate up to [number]. For guided tours we prefer to split groups into 30 students max and 50 students for self-guided tours to ensure you receive the best possible experience.

Itineraries, Resources, and Workshops:

We can facilitate the following:

  1. Full day workshop (usually 10am-2pm) is £16 per child. This includes a self-led tour of the museum, thrilling heritage boat trip on Windermere and a creative workshop led by our expert learning team.
  2. Self-led visit with boat trip is £13.50 per child. Explore the museum at your own pace using our “Launch Into It” resource for an interactive learning experience. Experience an exciting heritage boat trip across the lake.
  3. Self-guided museum visit costs £7.50 per child. This gives students freedom to explore the museum’s exhibits using the “Launch Into It” resource to enhance their learning experience.

All offers include access to indoor and outdoor spaces for lunchtime and breaks.

Risk Assessment:

Lakeland Arts has completed full risk assessments for school visits to each of our sites. These can be provided at the point of booking to support schools with their own procedures.

Facilities:

Our Learning Centre overlooks the Boating pond and the lakeshore. We can provide both indoor and outdoor areas for students to have their lunch or have breaks.

Accessibility and Disabled Facilities:

Our museum and grounds are accessible with automatic doors and ramps available. Accessible toilet facilities. Ear defenders and hearing loops available upon request from the front desk.
