Burghley House

Burghley House

Step back in time with a Tudor or Victorian themed visit to Burghley House. One of the largest and grandest houses of the 16th century, Burghley is the extraordinary legacy of William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I. School groups can enjoy truly immersive learning with our range of curriculum-focused workshops.

What We Offer Visiting Schools:

For over 500 years Burghley has filled people with awe and inspiration. So much more than a house, Burghley offers a unique glimpse of the way great houses have been lived in from the time of Queen Elizabeth to the present day. It is a wonderful example of the great Elizabethan ‘prodigy’ houses, built to honour the Queen.

There’s so much for learners to discover at Burghley. Explore the original soaring Tudor kitchen and tour the 18 State Rooms each filled with awe-inspiring art and priceless treasures. Discover the meandering Gardens full of imaginative planting, sculpture and surprises.

Burghley’s awesome woodland adventure play area Hide & Secrets is themed around William Cecil as the country’s first Chief Spymaster and offers a much-enjoyed addition to school visits.

Teachers can choose from a selection of themed days and workshops developed to target specific National Curriculum areas or pick from a wide range of activity options to tailor make your visit. We offer sessions from Key Stage 1 to Post 16, and our activities can be adapted to meet the abilities of the group or particular themes classes are currently working on.

Burghley offers learning sessions across a range of subjects and topics, including the Tudors, Victorians, Art & Literacy and Natural Sciences. A variety of formats are available including house tours, outdoor learning and sessions with costumed historical characters.

All school visits to Burghley include:

  • Activities led by fully trained Burghley House Education Team
