As well as the art gallery’s ever-changing displays which are often created in partnership with national museums, the Herbert offers a wide range of detailed talks, fantastic events and inventive workshops for adults and families. The Herbert Art Gallery encourages creativity, exploration and fun.


What We Offer Visiting Schools:

The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum offers various options for self-led visits and facilitated workshops, led by our expert Learning Team. We cover a variety of themes, linking to the national curriculum, that bring our museum collections to life. We approach all facilitated workshops with hands-on learning, providing pupils with memorable experiences.

Subjects and Topics Covered:

History: Local History, World War Two, Anglo-Saxons, Victorians, Fossils

Literature: Myths and Legends

Arts: Stories in Art, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture

Group Sizes Catered For:

Maximum of 32 pupils per workshop, multiple groups can be accommodated across the day.

Itineraries, Resources, and Workshops:

Itineraries are developed depending on a school’s booking requests. Typically a visit to the Herbert would be planned out at follows:

10am – Arrival

10.15am – 11.45am – first workshop

11.45am – 12.30pm – Lunch

12.30pm – 2.00pm – second workshop/self-led exploration

2.00pm – 2.15pm – collect belongings and depart

Workshops include a variety of topics covering history, art, science and literature.

Risk Assessment:

Risk assessments are available for all visits and can be found on our website. Risk assessments will also be sent out to the lead teacher at the time of booking and can be requested. Pre-visits are welcome. The education team all carry enhanced DBS clearance and take part in annual safeguarding training.

Pricing Information:

Self-led visits – Free

Facilitated workshops – £120 per session, up to 32 pupils per session.

Two-session discount – £200 for two workshops when booked for the same pupils to extend your visit to a full day experience.

Travel bursaries are available, claiming up to £250 back towards your transport costs for schools who book two sessions and have a minimum of 20% pupil premium.

Facilities:

We offer multiple classroom facilities, that can accommodate different session topics, including painting, pottery, art’s and crafts, and traditional learning.

Accessibility and Disabled Facilities:

The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum has a range of features designed to improve accessibility.

  • There is level access to each gallery floor and transfer between floors by lift.
  • There are accessible toilets on both ground and first floors.
  • Baby-change facilities are on the ground floor. The Herbert is proud to be breastfeeding friendly.
  • Gallery text panels and printed information has been designed to be easy to read.
  • Please note that Gallery lighting conditions vary between exhibition areas.
