‘A Sense Of Adventure’: The Deep Launches Brand New Send Educational Workshop

The Deep are pleased to introduce ‘A Sense of Adventure’, the first educational workshop that has been designed specifically for learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) including those with PMLD and complex needs. The cross-curricular 30-minute session invites small groups to experience the sensations of the seashore through a range of sensory stimuli related to ocean animals and habitats. Each activity has been crafted for learners who benefit from a more sensory learning experience, encouraging an exploration of marine life through open-ended play and investigation.

The Deep’s Education Team will work closely with SEND group leaders or teachers prior to their visit so that activities and session content reflects current topics or areas of learning and suits the individual needs within their group.

To begin the workshop, the Teachers will offer options that include storytelling, puppet play, Makaton animal introductions or simply a welcome, allowing time for learners to settle into The Deep’s Sea Lab space. The resources chosen for each SEND group will then be available for free-choice exploration and can be adapted throughout the session in response to learners’ individual needs and preferences. Activities may include discovering shapes and colours using a lightbox or investigating the movement and sounds of the sea through a range of tactile resources. To close, there is the option for groups to choose a game, discussion or story before departing for a self-guided tour around the aquarium.

‘A Sense of Adventure’ aims to support development towards individual targets in a range of areas, including explorative creative thinking, independent play, communication, social interaction, memory and concentration. The workshop also acknowledges the UN’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development 14 & 15. The Deep’s Teachers explain:

“We have enjoyed creating this workshop and look forward to continuing its development alongside our visiting groups. We are really grateful to the support of some fantastic local and national teachers and sensory learning experts, including of course the children and young people who have trialled the activities so far. ‘A Sense of Adventure’ engages all the senses to enhance understanding of The Deep, whilst developing learners’ self-awareness and appreciation of their place in the world around them.”

Katy Duke, Chief Executive Officer at The Deep, said:

“As an education charity, The Deep is fortunate enough to welcome a diverse range of learners through our doors each year, from Early Years to Post-16. The exciting addition of ‘A Sense of Adventure’ to the choices of workshops available will continue ensuring The Deep reaches a wide range of audiences to be inspired and learn more about our ocean.”

The Deep’s educational visit packages are subsided for learners and include a workshop, self-guided tour of the aquarium, dedicated lunch space and more. The experienced Education Team offer National Curriculum based workshops and hands-on activities, tailored for all Key Stages.
