Just over a week after running WizardFest – York’s first festival of wizardry – The Wizard Walk of York has picked up another national award.
The team won silver for Experience of the Year at last night’s VisitEngland Awards for Excellence. In March, Dan Wood and wife Bev picked up gold for Experience of the Year in the Visit York Awards, before being put forward for the national finals in Brighton. Also representing York and picking up a silver award, was Sandburn Hall in the Large Hotel of the Year category.
Dan says “It’s a been a wizarding whirlwind, first WizardFest and now a national win…we can’t believe it! We’re always grateful for every award and accolade, and it’s exciting to be recognised for bringing something different to the city.” The Wizard Walk of York focuses on magical fun for families, and is a mix of magic, illusion, comedy and storytelling. The Wizard has a host other awards up his sleeve including Best Tour three years running, Best Birthday Party Entertainer, Best of York 2024 and TripAdvisor’s 3 rd Best Family Experience in the World.
Dan adds “I love being York’s wizard and, whilst we’re truly thankful for every award, for us it’s all about the excitement and laughter on the tours. That’s the real magic.” Dan now has a second wizard guide, Viridian the Green, and is busily conjuring up new partnerships and ideas. Plans for WizardFest 2026 are already underway, and a new add-on to the tours called Sundaes and Dragons will soon launch with Loopy Scoops. Visitors on The Wizard Walk will be able to meet new pet dragon Ignis – or Iggy for short – have photos, then enjoy a Dragon Sundae and receive a collectable golden dragon coin. Public Wizard Walks run regularly from York’s Shambles, and private tours are often held for birthday parties, school groups, kids clubs, beavers, rainbows and more.
